Fashions in Furniture
Fashions changed rapidly during the decades following the end of the 2nd world war. By the 1950s, home-makers wanted furniture that matched their mood - modern, light and colourful. The Festival of Britain in 1951 introduced British consumers to new materials, techniques and styles that seemed futuristic and optimistic, perfect for the new era. Mass production techniques brought down costs and enabled many more people to furnish their homes with items that weren't hand-me-downs, and modular systems like G Plan allowed couples to add to their collections over time, as their families grew.
