Carl Jacobs 1951 Jason Chair for Kandya, Solid Beech and Bent Plywood
An iconic chair, designed by Danish designer Carl Jacobs in 1951 for British furniture manufacturer Kandya. The chair is made of a single piece of plywood, bent to form the chair shape, the two ends interlocked like a jigsaw piece underneath. The elegant tapered legs, typical of mid century design, are solid beech.
This chair was very modern and innovative in 1951, and its design influenced many subsequent stackable chairs. In 1952 it was selected as the dining chair for the South Bank restaurant on the site of the Festival of Britain, with 300 installed.
This example is in very good vintage condition, with very minor marks to the wood. It has a lovely warm colour and grain. It would work well as a dining or desk chair, or as a stylish occasional chair in the bedroom or hallway.
