Ercol 391 Spindle Back 'All-purpose Windsor' Chair in Elm and Beech
 
This single chair appears in the 1956 Ercol catalogue (see last photograph), described as the 'All-purpose Windsor chair'. British manufacturer Ercol are renowned for their quality materials and build, and many of their 50s/60s designs have become iconic.
 
This spindle-backed chair has a solid elm seat and beech back and legs. It was originally advertised as being suitable for the breakfast table, desk or bedroom. The 3 central spindles go behind the shaped seat in a lovely design feature.
 
The 391 originally came in natural or medium dark colour; this particular chair was originally stained medium dark but has been stripped to reveal the grain and is now a warm amber colour. It has been oiled and finished with a protective wax. It's in very good vintage condition with very minor signs of use.
